A dentist’s oral hygiene routine
General recommendations:
Brush your teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush or electric toothbrush 2x/day - once in the morning and once before bed.
Floss once daily - traditional string floss is the best.
Mouthwash is not necessary - but can be a useful adjunct in SOME circumstances. Most mouthwashes actually cause more harm than good. If you want to use a mouthwash, I recommend Therabreath. Stay away from alcohol-based mouthwash as they are drying to the oral cavity.
Tongue scraping: if you want that clean feeling that mouthwash gives, I recommend tongue scraping instead. Use a copper or stainless steel U shaped tongue scraper and lightly scrape off (from back to front) the buildup that occurs on the surface of your tongue. Be gentle, and wash the scraper off with soap and water after each use.
Visit your dentist twice a year for professional dental cleanings, diagnostic x-rays, and an exam. Despite the good job you can do at home, hygienists are talented healthcare professionals who will keep your teeth and gums in tip top shape when you see them regularly.
Some people require more frequent dental cleanings. This could be due to active periodontal disease, frequent decay, heavy staining, or a medical issue. Your dentist will tailor their recommendations on frequency specifically to you and your health.
